The Steering Wheel
President’s Message from BEV MARTEL, CPA-PCA President
It’s the end of February, as I write this, and the little rodent has predicted an early spring (he lied). Regardless, this time of year is when racing season starts. The Rolex 24 hours of Daytona has run with Porsche claiming another overall win. It was Porsche’s 19th in the 62nd running of the race. Porsche also has four more wins as an engine supplier. All this makes Porsche the overall winner of the 24 hours of Daytona.
Why is this important? It is Porsche’s racing heritage that gives us our great cars today. From early on the 356, 911, 912, 914 and others have given rise to a diverse model line-up that we enjoy today. Without the lessons learned on the track, Porsche would not have advanced to technological levels it has reached today. Whether it’s a 911, Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne, Panamera, Macan or Taycan, one thing is certain; they are all derived from racing, and they all drive like a Porsche.
As President I had the opportunity to attend the Zone 2 meeting in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It was held at Madison Automotive Apprentices (MAAP) run by Cole Scrogham. He and his family have a well-known racing history. The MAAP program is affiliated with James Madison University in order to provide opportunities to educate students in the automotive and motorsport fields as well as learning about automotive and racing history. MAAP is a 501(C)(3) non-profit. It is an excellent example of providing leadership to the next generations.
Our Central Pennsylvania PCA club similarly does this. Through volunteer efforts, CPA raises money and contributes to varies charities. Donations made to Thaddeus Stevens support the automotive program so that new generations of technicians will be available to fix our cars! CPA also donates to other charities in the area such as United Disabilities Services (UDS). These donations help people in our area. So the CPA’s call for volunteers not only helps the club raise money but it allows us to help others in our local communities.
I look forward to seeing everyone at our monthly board meeting. Dinner is on the club; any alcohol is on you. Please be sure to check the CPA website for current activities and as the weather improves, remember our cars are to be driven!! Be safe out there and keep racing on the tracks.
Bev
